New Releases for Jan. 17-23 (& Reader's Choice Giveaway)

It’s Monday, so it must be time to look at the new releases in sci fi, fantasy, urban fantasy, paranormal romance, and Young Adult paranormal for the week! And it's a fairly busy week for new releases, as you'll see. As always, I'll give away a book of choice to one commenter. Details at the end of the list! Open internationally.

* The Witch's Daughter,  by Paula Brackston (Thomas Dunne). Immortal witch flees warlock from 1600s to present-day England. Urban fantasy/time-travel.
* Farlander, by Col Buchanan (Tor). Religiously oppressed land run by urban cult takes on elite band of assassins. Fantasy.
* Pack of Lies, by Laura Anne Gilman (Luna). Paranormal investigator takes on bad guys in alternative NYC. Urban fantasy.
* God's War, by Kameron Hurley (Night Shade). A never-ending holy war in a dystopian world pits mercenaries against magicians against soldiers. Dystopian sci-fi.
* Bonded by Blood, by Laurie London (HQN). Vampire agency operative battles against black-market operations for special “sweet-blood” humans and finds more than he can resist. (A review of Bonded is coming up later this week!) Paranormal romance.
* Never Knew Another, by J.M. McDermott (Night Shade). Demon child Rachel hides out in Dogland and meets another outcast with a similar background but different view of life. First in a trilogy. Urban fantasy.
*The Kensei: A Lawson Vampire Novel, by Jon F. Merz (St. Martin's) Cynical black-belt vampire “fixer” and his former KGB lover look for R&R in Japan, but instead find themselves fighting a shadowy figure and an army of vampire-human hybrids. (An interview with Jon Merz is coming up here tomorrow, with a giveaway!) Urban fantasy.
* Allison Hewitt is Trapped, by Madeleine Roux (St. Martin's). Trapped in a bookstore when the zombie outbreak hits, Allison uses the Internet to chronicle her fight against zombie hordes. Urban fantasy.
* The Children of the Lost, by David Whitley (Roaring Brook Press). Cast out of the city of Agora where they were left at the end of The Midnight Charter, Mark and Lily must now survive in a dense forest full of witches, slums and secrets. YA fantasy.
* Home Fires, by Gene Wolfe (Tor). A military couple (she’s fighting in a distant solar system) reunites after years at war, only to find out she’s stayed the same age while he has aged (hm...instant trophy wife?). A belated honeymoon cruise brings on spies, aliens and pirates. Sci fi.
* Among Others, by Jo Walton (Tor). The daughter of a madwoman and magician is sent to boarding school in England, where she searches for a group of like-minded friends but draws the attention of Mommie Dearest. Urban fantasy.

So there ya have it! To win your choice, just tell me which one piques your interest! As always +1 for comment, +1 for blog follow, +1 for Twitter follow @Suzanne_Johnson, and +1 for Tweet or Retweet. Happy reading!

  26. Woo-hoo! Thanks for all the comments--looks like The Witch's Daughter is drawing a lot of interest. I've read that one, and while the writing style has an old-fashioned feel to it (intentionally, I assume, since the story starts in the 1700s) and I had a few other quibbles with it, overall I thought it a fascinating idea, and it held my interest.

I also recommend Bonded by Blood if you're a paranormal romance fan--this is the only true PNR being released this week, and I'm about three-quarters of the way through it. It's, uh, HOT.

The other one of this week's group I've read already is Jon Merz's The Kensei, which is a really different sort of urban fantasy/vampire mythos. I have an interview with Jon Merz on the blog (and a Kensei giveaway) tomorrow!

  27. I want to read Among Others. That really peak my interest.
