When she was seven, a horrific fey attack killed Donna Underwood’s father and drove her mother mad. Her own nearly fatal injuries were fixed by alchemy—the iron tattoos branding her hands and arms. Now seventeen, Donna feels like a freak, doomed by the magical heritage that destroyed her parents and any chance she had for a normal life. Only her relationship with her best friend, Navin, is keeping her sane. But when vicious wood elves abduct Navin, Donna is forced to accept her role in the centuries-old war between human alchemists and these darkest outcasts of Faerie. Assisted by Xan, a gorgeous guy with faery blood running through his veins and secrets of his own, Donna races to save Navin—even if it means betraying everything her parents fought to the death to protect.

MY THOUGHTS: This is one of those books that built and built. Then, suddenly, it was over and I was beating the wall and cursing unanswered questions. So, it is definitely the first in a series. The worldbuilding is first-rate, and I loved the use of alchemy. I mean, ALCHEMY--how cool is that?! The bad guys are smarmy and creepy, Donna is loveable and sympathetic (although, sorry, I did want to slap her BFF Navin around a bit), and Xan is one hot guy. Can't wait to see where this one goes next year with The Wood Queen. *tapping foot and waiting*

DOBBY! OMG, I forgot about Dobby and his hats. Can't believe we have only one Legolas...but Becky, I liked Elrond as well. I'm still holding onto Trent Kalamack, though.

I feel terribly unoriginal, but really, who wasn't in love with Orlando Bloom's depiction of Legolas? I know I sure was.
ReplyDelete+1 for comment!
Yep, sorry. I'll have to add to the chorus of unoriginality, but I love Legolas from the movies. :) He defined everything about elves as a race of power rather than of humor (like Santa's elves).

I think it'll be a battle between Legolas and Dobby. I pick... Pippin! Oh, that was hobbit :p Legolas ~

I have to say that I like Ceri better than Trent. She at least makes Rachel's life somewhat beter, but Trent is a great adversary. I also have to add Legalos to that list as well. :)

ReplyDeleteWe got a new puppy two months ago and when considering what to call him he named himself Dobby. They do that you know, puppies actually tell you what their name is.
