No, "Urban Fantasy Department 256" is where we take a book we're currently reading or recently finished--even if it isn't urban fantasy--and look on page 256 (if you're reading something shorter use page 56 or 156). Then share the fifth and sixth complete sentences. You can add a little context if you want.
Want to play? Post your sentences, and I'll enter you into a drawing for a wide-open Reader's Choice giveaway. Yep, anything you want. Read more below.
First, I finished two books this week, so I'll do two "Department 256" entries.
From Kim Harrison's Pale Demon, page 256. Rachel has run into some trouble and gone to the demon Algaliarept for a little set-to. He's just given her a spiffy new outfit to wear to her coven hearing:
A puff of burnt amber wafted up, and I winced. Whatever he had
given me was going to need to be dry cleaned.
From page 256 of Lydia Dare's It Happened One Bite, a cool new historical paranormal romance being released March 1 that I'll be featuring on the blog in early March with a giveaway. The heroine, a Scottish witch named Blaire, is speaking to Lord Kettering, a cursed vampire:
"Ye can take from me. Take whatever you need."
So, what are you reading? (See, this is a sneaky way to hear about some new books.) If your name is picked by our old pal random.org to win this international giveaway, you can literally pick out any book you want to win. My only stipulations: that it be less than US$15 and be available from either Amazon or Book Depository. As always, +1 for comment, +1 for blog follow, +1 for Twitter follow @Suzanne_Johnson, and +1 for Tweeting the contest. Share with me!

Morning, Suzanne! What a fun contest!
ReplyDeleteMy current read is "Venice Vampyr" a novella by Tina Folsom.
Here's the sentences from p. 56:
He could only imagine that it had been an oversight for Massimo to wear the ring in public and give himself away. Unless, of course, he didn’t consider Isabella’s house to be a public place, but rather a place where his secret was safe.

Ooh, that's a new one to me. Love Venice and love vampires. Sounds like my kind of book.
ReplyDeleteKody Keplinger's THE DUFF
ReplyDelete"That I wasn't a whore, that I wasn't alone.
I didn't know Vicki all that well."
I'm only 60 pages in to this, so thanks for finding a way for me to broadcast that little tidbit. Now I wonder what happened??

Definitely not urban fantasy, but I'm currently reading "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" by Muriel Spark. Here's from Page 56 (it's short!):
ReplyDeleteMiss Brodie's reply was more anglicized in is accent than was its usual proud wont. "Good mawning," she replied, in the corridors, flattening their scorn beneath the chariot wheels of her superiority, and deviating her head towards them no more than an insulting half-inch.

@annerb--I've heard good things about "The Duff," and those are provocative sentences!
ReplyDelete@Bus Reader...OMG. That is brilliant: "flattening their scorn beneath the chariot wheels of her superiority." Wish I had written that!
Interesting twist on a meme/giveaway. I literally just started an urban fantasy novel, so I'm nowhere near page 256 yet, but I'll skip ahead to share.
ReplyDeleteKING'S JUSTICE by Maurice Broaddus (Angry Robot Books):
"Mulysa leapt from the couch and lunged at her. She deflected the blow and snuck him in the kidneys."
This is an ARC, so that may be "stuck" instead of "snuck."

This is a great idea! I love this!
ReplyDeleteFrom The Darkest Night - Lords of the Underworld series by Gena Showalter page 256:
This is a scene where Ashlyn walks into Maddox's bedroom after his death-curse has been carried out.
Oh God, she covered her mouth with her hands. In a shocked trance, she found herself walking towards him.

Okay, I WAS reading the Dragon Keeper, but my Co-Reviewer, AKA "The Sam Stanley Experience" snatched it. So now I'm reading "Sweet as Sin" by Inez Kelley on my Kindle, but it doesn't have page numbers, so I'll go to location 2560: "If he could imagine having a father, it would be the man beside him. He hated that Preacher gave voice to the words his soul couldn't speak."
ReplyDeletePhew! This one is a little racy in places--was nervous about playing.
Currently reading Sweep Volume 3, this is from Sweep:The Calling
ReplyDeletePage 156:
The owl held out a robe made of thin, shiny brown fabric. "Take off your clothes and put this on," she said.

I just started True Love and other disasters by Rachel Gibson so skipping ahead to page 256...
ReplyDelete'His soft laugh filled her ear. So rare it poured through her and woke her up inside. "That must mean my dad's there."
I have no idea what's going on either, I'm only on page 41. :)

I'm currently finishing up Jaye Wells's Green Eyed Demon, the latest in her Sabina Kane series. I'm just including one sentence since it's followed by a quote that makes no sense out of context! Sabina and Adam are about to ambush someone they think can give them intel on some recent events and Sabina's missing sister.
ReplyDeleteLuckily, Adam never seemed to throw anything away from his trusty portable magic kit.
This from Susan Squires A Twist in Time. "Now I'm goibg to feed us some steak for breakfast," she pronounced, rising. "Or , uh, lunch as the case may be.
ReplyDeleteWow, that's cool, I love this contest! So I've just finished Dreams of a Dark Warrior by Kresley Cole - it's one of the Cole-books, I think :) So here is the excerpt:
ReplyDelete"And each time he’d glanced over his shoulder to check on her, her eyes had flickered—with definite
interest. Chest swelled with pride, he realized he might have a shot at more."
Thank you for th egiveaway, again :)

Fun stuff! All the different things we're reading.
ReplyDeleteI've had Kresley Cole on my TBR pile forever but haven't read yet--and the Maurice Broadus book sounded interesting when it showed up in the new releases.
I'm in the middle of several books right now. Two are romances by Susan Elizabeth Phillips (love the feel-good stories). But here's a bit from "Shadowfever" by Karen Marie Moning. It's book 5 in a five-book series set in Dublin, Ireland. The book's almost 600 pages.
ReplyDeletePg 256

ReplyDeleteFrom MOONSHINE by Alaya Johnson (which I just started, so I can't put it in context.)

Nicholas cursed. "Around me, Boys!" he yelled, as Daddy and Troy and half a dozen other men wielded their swords like extensions of their arms.

I'm reading Pegasus by Robin McKinley. Since I'm not on page 256 yet and didn't want anything spoiled, I'm using page 156. The heroine's brother tricks her into sneaking into the Hall of Magicians.
ReplyDeleteHe had also told her that on a sunny day you could see faint reflective ribbons of the enormous power used to maintain the protective magic of the Wall, dancing in the sunlight like dust motes.
"And did you learn what magic smells like?" [asks Sylvie's father]

Right now, I am reading Entice by Carrie Jones. This is the 3rd book in the series and Zara has gone to Valhalla to go and rescue Nick from Valhalla. The two sentences are:
ReplyDeleteShe looks at Nick. "Do you choose to leave the sacred halls of Valhalla, to renounce your rightful place as a warrior of Odin, and return with her?"
Thank you for the awesome opportunity, and if I win, I would like to have Iron Crowned by Richelle Mead which comes out February 22 and is $7.99 without shipping and handling according to

It's far from urban fantasy, but I'm currently reading The Price of a Bargain by Gordon Laird. The 5th and 6th sentences from page 256 are:
ReplyDelete"It's an effect of market inefficiency and existing capital investment. Many of the foundries, factories, and skilled workers that competed for trade but lost out to China and other countries, are no longer operational or simply no longer exist."
