THE OFFICIAL BLURB: Can an accountant defeat a supervillain? Celia West, only daughter of the heroic leaders of the superpowered Olympiad, has spent the past few years estranged from her parents and their high-powered lifestyle. She’s had enough of masks and heroics, and wants only to live her own quiet life out from under the shadow of West Plaza and her rich and famous parents. Then she is called into her boss’ office and told that as the city’s top forensic accountant, Celia is the best chance the prosecution has to catch notorious supervillain the Destructor for tax fraud. In the course of the trial, Celia’s troubled past comes to light and family secrets are revealed as the rift between Celia and her parents grows deeper. Cut off from friends and family, Celia must come to terms with the fact that she might just be Commerce City’s only hope.
MY THOUGHTS: If you like Kitty (and even if, like me, you're not a big fan of superheroes), you'll love Celia West, the spectacularly non-superhero daughter of Captain Olympus and Flash. Talk about parent issues! This single-title book is breezy and fun to read, grabs you from Page One and doesn't let go. Vaughn is great at weaving Celia's conflict over her parental relationships with the main plot as the authorities try to bring down the Destructor. In a fit of teen rebelliousness, Celia had suffered Stockholm Syndrome after being kidnapped by the Destructor--then sided with him briefly against her parents. As a result, she gets caught in the middle of the trial, in a very public way. There's even a little romance on the side with a police detective who might or might not be a pawn of his father the mayor.
Beneath the kind of campy superhero theme is a story all about finding one's own way in the world, the legacy of family (good and bad), and the struggle of a young woman to find what makes her a superhero--even if it's being the world's best forensic accountant.
After wallowing in the dystopian fiction pool for a while, reading about Commerce City was great fun. No surprise here, but Carrie Vaughn should have another hit on her hands.

My favorite superhero, eh? Does Doctor Who count? I know he's not exactly a super hero, but he's definitely my favorite save the world guy!
ReplyDeleteI'm going w/Batman, the Christian Bale version.

Thor was my favorite growing up. I have always had a thing for Norse mythology.
ReplyDeleteOverall, though, I think Doc Savage was my hero 'cause he did it all without superpowers (he used his brains and technology.) I like Batman for the same reason - a superhero without super powers.
I've always been a fan of the X-Men. Hey, if they're a team, I can pick them all, right? :)

I'm going to go with Batman, as well. Gotta love a psychopath who puts on a costume and runs around at night fighting "the bad people". :)

BARRY ALLEN aka THE SILVER AGE FLASH ::ahem:: why? He's everything I ever wanted in a guy--honest, hardworking, loyal, witty...and yeah he can be a bit of a fuddy-duddy at times (especially in the 60's comics), but he made up for it by being the best husband, Uncle, Mentor, Hero and Father there ever was.

Cool review!
ReplyDeleteThat question is a tough one for me. I guess I'd say Wolverine. He's pretty awesome and I like his surly yet effective attitude.

Apart from the main character of my WIP, my favourite superhero is Spiderman. He's an everyman, with normal problems, with great humor.

Favorite superhero? I never really thought about it. Batman is always a good one. I loved Chris O'Donnell playing Robin with George Clooney as Batman.
ReplyDeleteI think that the Green Lantern might become a fave of mine once I see him played by Ryan Reynolds this summer. Yum!

Indiana Jones. What he pulled off was superhuman so there was some magic in that. I have one of the bull whips and I totally could not do what he did with that thing.

I'm not a big fan of superheroes. The tights and capes and whatnot always struck me as too silly for true heroism. But, if I had to choose one, I'd go with Aquaman because I always respected his respect for nature.

ReplyDeleteI am also a huge, huge fan of Batman. One of the more recent superheros I've come to love is Hit Girl from Kick-A**.
Thank you!

I love Carrie's books and this one looks really great. I was going to ask if Xena counts and then i laughed because someone else picked Gabrielle. But aside from those 2, I'd have to pick Girl Genius or Martha Washington (yes, I am that big of a comic book dork, LOL).

One list I read included the GREEN CROSS CODE MAN.
ReplyDeleteSeriously as a child he was the guy I paid most attention to, every time I crossed the road. The rest were a bunch of actors in spandex.
