Sherrilyn Kenyon is back with the fifth in her League series (each does work as a standalone), with this story revolving around Caillen. That's the one we're looking at today--and a contest at the end!
THE OFFICIAL BLURB: Just when you think you have it all figured out, life belts you to the ground. And when Caillen discovers a truth he'd never suspected about himself, everything in his life is turned on its head. Desideria has a secret of her own- one that could end her life if anyone ever learns it. The last thing she expects is to meet a criminal in her sheltered world never mind find herself marooned on a hostile colony with him while his enemies try to kill them both. And as they struggle to survive, her father's favorite curse resonates. "May you get exactly what you want and live long enough to regret it."
MY THOUGHTS: Born of Shadows is, admittedly, the first of the League series I’ve read, and it came as a bit of a surprise since I’ve read quite a few of Sherrilyn Kenyon’s paranormal romances. I almost hesitate to call this one PNR but, rather, more of a dark urban fantasy. The romantic element is there, but when the hero and heroine don’t even meet until a quarter of the way into the book, obviously romance is not the focus. That’s not bad by any means. It just took me by surprise. I kept waiting for romance and it was kind of in the background.
That being said, I really enjoyed the book. Caillen is a rogue pirate in this futuristic world, who is literally pulled from the gallows where he awaits the guillotine--and then finds out he’s a prince. He’s not cut out for the prince business, so it’s an easy matter for him to be set up for a murder along with the heroine Desideria. The worldbuilding is interesting, and the characters are fun. Just don’t expect the romance to be on the front burner!

Thanks for sharing...sounds great. The best PNR I've read lately is Shadowfever by Karen Marie Moning. I loved that whole series. I just bought my T-shirt to show some Barron's support ;)

Hi Suzanne,
ReplyDeleteHmm. The romance comes in later? That's different. But when it comes to SK, I'm sure it will be a good read. She creates great characters and plots. Thanks for giving us a review.
Now off to meet my boot camp word goal.

Well if by PNR, you mean books that would be classified in the adult romance section of the store, than the best book I've read was Dark Lover by J.R. Ward. Outside of that section, I'd go with Firelight by Sophie Jordan-- amazing read.

Nalini Singh has just sucked me into her Guild Hunter series and I am salivating over them! I enjoy SK's League and don't mind that the romance is not front & center. The world she has created keeps me entertained.

ReplyDeleteI would love to win this book. I just adore all of Sherrilyn Kenyon's books.
ReplyDeleteThe best paranormal romance I have read in any book recently was in Ilona Andrew's Kate Daniel series. Her book Magic Bleeds has some wonderful romance in it. Curran and Kate are one of my favorite couples. Another great romance is in CL Wilson's Tarien Soul series. Five books that touch your heart and leave you lost in thought.

I love Sherrilyn Kenyon books. I love them all. I have to say her Dark-Hunter series is my favorite paranormal romance series. I love the League series as well. I can't wait to read Born of Shadows! I love her sense of humor and the wonderful way she builds her worlds. She paints such a clear picture in my mind I can see it as I'm reading.
ReplyDeleteAs for how to catagorize the League series, I believe it falls into paranormal romance because of the abilities of some of the characters, urban fantasy because of the setting, sci-fi because its out of this world and deals with other galaxies. It covers them all.
The romance of this one may come later in the book, but anyone who has followed the League series know alot about Caillen already. However, Sherri is so good about making all her books great stand alone books buy the way she fills in the background of her characters. I believe that is one of the things that makes her such a great writer.
When it comes to how soon the hero/heroine should meet, I think the more you know about them the more you understand them. It shouldn't matter whether they meet at the beginning of the book, or, later in the story. Besides, anticipation can make it all the better.
Ok. I've rambled on enough now. LOL
Thanks for the wonderful giveaway!
