Review & Contest: DEN OF THIEVES by David Chandler

Thursday seems a good day for...fantasy. Yeah, I know I teased you with The Sookie Stackhouse Companion, and I will have it next week for sure. Today, I'm looking at a new book (and the first in a new trilogy) called Den of Thieves. As always, read on for a chance to win a copy!

ABOUT THE BOOK:  Born and raised in the squalid depths of the Free City of Ness, Malden became a thief by necessity. Now he must pay a fortune to join the criminal operation of Cutbill, lord of the underworld—and one does not refuse the master . . . and live. The coronet of the Burgrave would fulfill Malden’s obligations, though it is guarded by hungry demons that would tear the soul from any interloper. But the desperate endeavor leads to a more terrible destiny, as Malden, an outlaw knight, and an ensorcelled lady must face the most terrifying evil in the land.

MY THOUGHTS: Den of Thieves wasn't really what I was expecting, which was a gritty and dark fantasy more akin to urban fantasy in an epic setting than a sword-and-sorcery kind of fantasy. Especially since David Chandler is a pseudonym for David Wellington, who's made his name in the horror field writing zombie tales. And it has a prologue, and you know how I hate prologues just on principle.
Still, it was a short prologue and once I realized that it was a little more PG-13 than what I'd expected, I was able to settle in and enjoy the read. I liked our thief Malden, who's in a bit of a bind throughout the story and has to do some fancy maneuvering to escape the demons, and found the Free City of Ness (it even has a map of the city) a fascinating bit of worldbuilding, with its overcrowded anthills of people.
Den of Thieves is the first in a fast-release Ancient Blades Trilogy, with book two coming out in September and book three in November--so if you want to check out the whole series you won't have long to wait.

Want to win a copy of Den of Thieves and check it out for yourself? You know the routine: +1 entry for comment, +1 for blog follow, +1 for Twitter follow @Suzanne_Johnson, and +1 for a tweet or retweet of the contest. Ride on, sire!

  3. I always like a good bad guy (thief) as the story's main character. Not enough of those!

  11. I like to try new authors and this is one to me but I must admit the story sounds a bit formulaic.

Thieves are becoming as overused as princes, wizards and sword masters.

Still I am always open to being convinced by a really good writer.

So please enter me in the giveaway.

    Thanks.
