Review & Contest: THE SOOKIE STACKHOUSE COMPANION by Charlaine Harris

Okay, let’s all say it together: “Soooookaaaaay.” Whew. Had to get that bad Stephen Moyer impression out of my system. I’ve had a love-hate relationship with Sookie Stackhouse over the years. I started the first book in the series twice before I finally read it through, got hooked on the second, and never looked back. I had mixed feelings when author Charlaine Harris announced recently that the series would be coming to an end after two more books, the first to be released next spring. Eric seemed to have lost some of his zip when he got domesticated, but it will still be hard to let them go.

Now, we have The Sookie Stackhouse Companion, out this week, offering a comprehensive look at the world of Sookie the book telepath (as opposed to the “True Blood” version, because they’re quite different). Want to win a copy? Read on!

THE OFFICIAL BLURB: Charlaine Harris has topped the bestseller charts and has become a nationwide phenomenon, thanks to the unconventional-and otherworldly- life of Sookie Stackhouse. Now, in her own words, Sookie gives readers a look at her family, friends, enemies, adventures, and-of course-the lovers who set her world on fire...
            Readers will:
            • Tour Bon Temps, the small Louisiana town that Sookie calls home, and visit the houses of her Gran and her sometime vampire lover, Bill
            • Prowl around the werewolf and were-panther communities
            • Browse through her best friend Tara's dress shop
            • Belly up to the bar in Merlotte's, where Sookie works
            • Get must-have Bon Temps recipes-including Caroline Bellfleur's famous chocolate cheesecake
            • Test themselves with trivia questions from the series

MY THOUGHTS: Okay, basically here’s the selling point for me of The Sookie Stackhouse Companion: A new novella, “Small Town Wedding,” where we FINALLY get some resolution to Sookie’s relationship with John Quinn, the weretiger. I’ve always been a big fan of Quinn, so I won’t even spoil things by saying whether or not I was happy with the resolution. But it is resolved. It’s also an entertaining story where Sookie goes with Sam to his brother’s wedding in Texas, getting embroiled in a feud between the two-natured and the townspeople that threatens to turn ugly. And no, there’s not a vampire in sight.
There’s also a really funny series of “private correspondence”—letters and emails and text messages—between Eric and Bill, with each set of letters following a summary of one of the books in the series. They’re hilarious, filled with Eric’s nonstop sarcasm and Bill’s kind of sanctimonious sincerity.
Recipes are good. We love recipes, and I have a couple of these on my tentative Thanksgiving menu now.
The negative? Well, the trivia’s kind of fun but I wasn’t very good at it. Even the easy questions I found hard, which may mean I’m just not diehard enough. The book summaries are kind of dull, considering. I mean the smokin’ hot shower scene between Sookie and Eric—and I don’t have to tell you which one I mean—is summarized thus: “They become lovers.” Seriously? So the summaries are kind of dry. There’s also an interview with Alan Ball, I guess to lure in the folks who love “True Blood” but haven’t read the books—and it is entertaining in that he answers questions from fans who’re obviously partial to the book and ends up having to defend keeping Vampire Bill in such a major role when he kind of falls to the wayside in the books.
All in all, it’s a fun read and a good addition to your Sookie library if only to get the novella.

  2. I'm an Alcide girl! I always liked the steady were in the books, but have to admit that the True Blood Alcide sealed the deal!

  6. Sigh. I am an Alcide girl.

And it's Sookeh, not Soookay, which is why your impression is so crummy. IMHO. *snort*

I fell off the Sookie wagon before the last book came out, I have some catching up to do!

  8. LOL-Teri. My Bill impression has gotten kind of rusty since Alexander Skaarsgard started shedding his clothes so often. Bill who?

  9. Oh hard question! Loved Bill in the beginning - now I despise him. Alcide just seems so perfect. What about Sam? I still consider him one of Sookie's since he was so in love with her and he is completely awesome. However, Eric is the man! Books or tv show - it's Eric!

  15. I was in love with Quinn, but since he's out of the picture, I'm with Eric. He's such a bad boy, too. Love him in the books way more than the television series. He just cracks me up at times.

I'd love to win the ARC, but if I don't I see myself ordering the book. I have them all!!

  21. Well I haven't read the books yet. But I do watch the show. Quinn is not part of the show yet. While a weretiger sounds like he would be hot, I'm going to have to go with Alcide based on the show so far.
