have a couple of these coming up for review in the next couple of weeks, most
notably the new book from Brenna Yovanoff...so stay tuned!
As
always, Reader’s Choice is an international giveaway, so dig in! (And if a book
in a series catches your eye, you can always request the first in the series instead.)

Death Watch,
by Ari Berk
(Nov.
15, Simon & Schuster)
They say the dead should rest in
peace. Not all the dead agree. One
night, Silas Umber's father Amos doesn’t come home from work. Devastated, Silas
learns that his father was no mere mortician but an Undertaker, charged with
bringing The Peace to the dead trapped in the Shadowlands, the states of limbo
binding spirits to earth. With Amos gone, Silas and his mother have no choice
but to return to Lichport, the crumbling seaside town where Silas was born, and
move in with Amos’s brother, Charles. Even as Silas eagerly explores his
father’s town and its many abandoned streets and overgrown cemeteries, he grows
increasingly wary of his uncle. There is something not quite right going on in
Charles Umber’s ornate, museum-like house—something, Silas is sure, that is
connected to his father’s disappearance. When Silas’s search leads him to his
father’s old office, he comes across a powerful artifact: the Death Watch, a
four hundred year old Hadean clock that allows the owner to see the dead. Death
Watch in hand, Silas begins to unearth Lichport’s secret history—and discovers
that he has taken on his father’s mantle as Lichport’s Undertaker. Now, Silas
must embark on a dangerous path into the Shadowlands to embrace his destiny and
discover the truth about his father—no matter the cost. YA
Wherever
You Go, by
Heather Davis (Nov. 15, Harcourt Children’s)
Seventeen-year-old Holly Mullen has
felt lost and lonely ever since her boyfriend, Rob, died in a tragic accident.
The fact that she has to spend most of her free time caring for her little
sister and Alzheimer’s-stricken grandfather doesn’t help. But Holly has no idea
that as she goes about her days, Rob’s ghost is watching over her. He isn’t
happy when he sees his best friend, Jason, reach out to help Holly with her
grandfather—but as a ghost, he can do nothing to stop it. Is his best friend
really falling for his girlfriend? As Holly wonders whether to open her heart
to Jason, the past comes back to haunt her. Her grandfather claims to be
communicating with the ghost of Rob. Could the messages he has for Holly be
real? And if so, how can the loved ones Rob left behind help his tortured soul
make it to the other side? Told from the perspectives of Holly, Jason, and Rob,Wherever
You Gois is a poignant story about making peace with the past, opening
your heart to love, and finding the courage to move forward into the light. YA
The
Pledge, by Kimberly Derting (Nov. 15, Margaret
K. McElderry)
In the violent country of Ludania,
the language you speak determines what class you are, and there are harsh
punishments if you forget your place—looking a member of a higher class in the
eye can result in immediate execution. Seventeen-year-old Charlaina (Charlie
for short) can understand all languages, a dangerous ability she’s been hiding
her whole life. Her only place of release is the drug-filled underground club scene,
where people go to shake off the oppressive rules of the world they live in.
There, she meets a beautiful and mysterious boy who speaks a language she’s
never heard, and her secret is almost exposed. Through a series of violent
upheavals, it becomes clear that Charlie herself is the key to forcing out the
oppressive power structure of her kingdom. YA
Circus Galacticus,
by Deva Fagan
(Nov. 15, Harcourt Children’s)
Trix can deal with being an orphan
charity case at a snotty boarding school. She can hold her own when everyone
else tells her not to dream big dreams. She can even fight back against the
mysterious stranger in a silver mask who tries to steal the meteorite her
parents trusted her to protect. But her life is about to change forever. The Circus
Galacticus has come to town, bringing acts to amaze, delight, and terrify. And
now the dazzling but enigmatic young Ringmaster has offered Trix the chance to
be a part of it. Soon Trix discovers an entire universe full of deadly enemies
and potential friends, not to mention space leeches, ancient alien artifacts,
and exploding chocolate desserts. And she just might unravel the secrets of her
own past—if she can survive long enough. YA
Tricks of the Trade, by Laura Anne Gilman (Nov. 15, Luna)
The name’s Torres, Bonnie Torres,
and I’m a paranormal scene investigator—rooting out the truth about crimes of
magic. It’s dangerous and boring and scary and fascinating. Though not everyone
in the Cosa Nostradamus is happy we’re around, which can make things…tricky.
Working two cases—looking into a murder for the NYPD, and a rich man’s
break-in—should be well within our abilities. But when things start getting
weird in the Electric Apple, Private Unaffiliated Paranormal Investigations is
stretched to the limits, trying to keep one step ahead and out of trouble. Add
in rumors of a powerful creature gunning for us and it’s not just our rep on
the line this time—if we don’t solve this case, everyone will suffer.
Fortunately, around here, when the going gets weird, the weird hire us. Third
in the Paranormal Scientific Investigations series. UF
The Always War,
by Margaret Peterson Haddix (Nov. 15, Simon and Schuster)
In a war-torn future United States,
fifteen-year-old Tessa, her childhood friend Gideon, now a traumatized military
hero, and Dek, a streetwise orphan, enter enemy territory and discover the
shocking truth about a war that began more than seventy-five years earlier. YA
Shatter Me,
by Tahereh Mafi
(Nov. 15, HarperTeen)
Juliette hasn't touched anyone in
exactly 264 days. The last time she did, it was an accident, but The
Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette's touch is
fatal. As long as she doesn't hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world
is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl.
Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don't fly
anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color. The Reestablishment said their way
was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many
people are dead that the survivors are whispering war- and The Reestablishment
has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into
a poisonous body. Maybe she's exactly what they need right now. Juliette has to
make a choice: Be a weapon. Or be a warrior. First in a new series. YA
Lightbringer,
by K.D. McEntire
(Nov. 15, Pyr)
Wendy has the ability to see souls
that have not moved on—but she does not seek them out. They seek her. They
yearn for her . . . or what she can do for them. Without Wendy's powers, the
Lost, the souls that have died unnaturally young, are doomed to wander in the
never forever, and Wendy knows she is the only one who can set them free by
sending them into the light. Each
soul costs Wendy, delivering too many souls would be deadly, and yet she is
driven to patrol, dropping everyone in her life but her best friend, Eddie—who
wants to be more than friends—until she meets Piotr.
Piotr, the first Rider
and guardian of the Lost, whose memory of his decades in the never, a world
that the living never see, has faded away. With his old-fashioned charms, and
haunted kindness, he understands Wendy in ways no one living ever could, yet
Wendy is hiding that she can do more than exist in the never. Wendy is falling
for a boy who she may have to send into the light. YA
Vampire Academy: The Ultimate Guide, by Michelle Rowen and Richelle Mead (Nov. 15,
Razorbill)
Sink your teeth into the perfect holiday
gift and must-have collector's item for every fan of Richelle Mead's totally
addicting Vampire Academy series. Discover the history of St. Vladimir's
Academy, explore the dark psychology behind Rose and Lissa's spirit bond, and
find out even more illicit secrets about Moroi society. This ultimate guide
will feature everything readers want and need to go even deeper into the world
of Vampire Academy, Frostbite, Shadow Kiss, Blood
Promise, Spirit Bound, and Last Sacrifice . . . every heartache,
every betrayal, every sacrifice, and so much more! YA
The Other Side of Dark, by Sarah Smith (Nov. 15, Atheneum)
Since losing both of her parents,
fifteen-year-old Katie can see and talk to ghosts, which makes her a loner
until fellow student Law sees her drawing of a historic house and together they
seek a treasure rumored to be hidden there by illegal slave-traders. Law Walker
knew Katie Mullens before she was crazy. Before her mother died. Law knows
Katie’s crazy now, but she’s always been talented. And she keeps filling sketch
pads even though her drawings have gone a little crazy as well—dark, bloody.
What Law doesn’t know is that these drawings are real. Or were real. Katie
draws what she sees—and Katie sees dead people. People who have died—recently,
and not so recently—in accidents, from suicide, even a boy who was trapped in a
house that burned down more than 100 years ago. And it’s this boy who makes Law
want to get to know Katie all over again. So what if his dad doesn’t want him dating
a white girl? So what if people think Katie is dangerous? The ghost boy is
hiding a secret that Law needs to know—and it’s much bigger, much more shocking
than anyone ever expected. YA
The Ruby Kiss,
by Helen Scott Taylor
(Nov. 15, DP)
Nightshade hungers to bring the
strong and beautiful to their knees beneath the ecstasy of his bite, but he has
never known sexual lust—not until he meets Ruby McDonald, the curvy redhead who
wields attitude and strength like an ax, and who would be the perfect mother of
his children. Caught in a clash between the Seelie and Unseelie courts, he vows
not only her survival but also to win her heart. Plagued by magic inherited
from a father she never knew, Ruby wants answers. Nightshade has them. And when
he crashes into her bedroom late one night, the fairy’s silvery eyes, dark
intensity, and striking black wings tempt her with a whole lot more: a
mysterious world waiting to be explored, a dangerous love that binds her in
body, mind, and spirit…and the children she thought she could never have. Ahead
looms a choice between freedom and a power some would kill to possess. Should
she deny her desires, or succumb to the seduction of the Ruby Kiss. Fourth in
the Magic Knot series. PNR
Double
Dead, by Chuck Wendig (Nov. 15, Abaddon)
Coburn’s
been dead now for close to a century, but seeing as how he’s a vampire
and all, it doesn’t much bother him. Or at least it didn’t, not until he awoke
from a forced five-year slumber to discover that most of human civilization was
now dead—but not dead like him, oh no. See,
Coburn likes blood. The rest of the walking dead, they like brains. He’s
smart. Them, not so much. But they outnumber him by about a million to one. And
the clotted blood of the walking dead cannot sustain him. Now he’s starving.
And nocturnal. And more pissed-off than a bee-stung rattlesnake. The vampire
not only has to find human survivors (with their sweet, sweet blood), but now
he has to transition from predator to protector—after all, a man has to look
after his food supply. UF
The Space Between,
by Brenna Yovanoff
(Nov. 15, Razorbill)
Everything is made of steel, even
the flowers. How can you love anything in a place like this? Daphne is the
half-demon, half-fallen angel daughter of Lucifer and Lilith. Life for her is
an endless expanse of time, until her brother Obie is kidnapped - and Daphne
realizes she may be partially responsible. Determined to find him, Daphne
travels from her home in Pandemonium to the vast streets of Earth, where
everything is colder and more terrifying. With the help of the human boy she
believes was the last person to see her brother alive, Daphne glimpses into his
dreams, discovering clues to Obie's whereabouts. As she delves deeper into her demonic
powers, she must navigate the jealousies and alliances of the violent
archangels who stand in her way. But she also discovers, unexpectedly, what it
means to love and be human in a world where human is the hardest thing to be. YA
The Future of Us,
by Jay Asher and Carolyn Mackler (Nov. 21, Razorbill)
It's 1996, and less than half of all
American high school students have ever used the Internet. Emma just got her
first computer and an America Online CD-ROM. Josh is her best friend. They
power up and log on--and discover themselves on Facebook, fifteen years in the
future. Everybody wonders what their Destiny will be. Josh and Emma are about
to find out. YA
