If
it’s Monday, it must be time to look at the new releases in speculative fiction
this week—and you get to pick which one you’d like to win! Actually, we’re
doing more than a week’s worth because there aren’t many releases this week and
are a TON next week, so I’m throwing a few from next week in with this group.
Some big releases here, folks—including the new Kim Harrison book, the new one
from Lauren DeStefano, Jennifer Estep…it’s just a ridiculous bounty of epic
reading goodness!
What
do you want to read? Leave a comment and tell me, and I’ll draw one name to win
his or her choice. International, as always. And if the book is in a series you
haven’t started, you can always pick the first one in the series instead.
Vaudeville: mad, mercenary, dreamy, and absurd, a
world of clashing cultures and ferocious showmanship and wickedly delightful
deceptions. But sixteen-year-old
pianist George Carole has joined vaudeville for one reason only: to find the
man he suspects to be his father, the great Heironomo Silenus. Yet as he chases
down his father’s troupe, he begins to understand their performances are
strange even for vaudeville: for wherever they happen to tour, the very nature
of the world seems to change.
Mike is a tattoo artist
running his own shop, and Deb is the piercing artist he hires to round out the
motley crew at his studio of four. The last thing either expects is romance,
but that’s exactly what happens when they follow their off-kilter careers and
love lives into disaster. When Mike follows a growing trend and tattoos the
ashes of deceased loved ones into several customers’ tattoos, he has no idea
that it will one day provide the solution—and solace—he will sorely need. And
when the life of a serial killer collides with the lives of those in the tattoo
shop, Mike and Deb will stop at nothing in their quest for revenge, even if it
means stepping outside the known boundaries of life and death.
Rhine and Gabriel have escaped the mansion, but danger is
never far behind. Running away brings them
into a trap, in the form of a twisted carnival whose ringmistress keeps watch
over a menagerie of girls. Just as Rhine uncovers what plans await her, her
fortune turns again. The two are determined to get to Manhattan, to relative safety
with Rhine’s twin brother, Rowan. But the road there is long and perilous - and
in a world where young women only live to age twenty and young men die at
twenty-five, time is precious. Worse, they can’t seem to elude Rhine’s
father-in-law, Vaughn, who is determined to bring Rhine back to the mansion—by
any means necessary. Second in the Chemical Garden series.
Ritually murdered corpses are appearing across
Cincinnati, terrifying amalgams of human and other. Pulled in to help
investigate by the FIB, former witch turned day-walking demon Rachel Morgan
soon realizes a horrifying truth — a would-be creator is determined to make his
(or her) own demons. But it can’t be done without Rachel’s blood. As a bounty hunter, Rachel has battled
vampires, witches, werewolves, demons, and more. But humanity itself might be
her toughest challenge. Tenth in the Hollows series.
He might be known for his effortless charm, but Guardian Jackson
Foss is hiding a terrible secret. For months, he has battled the emergence of
his dark nature—deadly urges that threaten to consume him. And those cravings
only intensify when he meets Arianna Wells, the human he’s been assigned to
protect. Smart and perceptive, Arianna doesn't seem like a dangerous temptress.
Yet she awakens in Jackson an unstoppable need that, if left unchecked, will
brand him a traitor…a crime punishable by death. Third in the Sweetblood series.
Dangerous promises and beguiling threats swirl
together in a dozen stories of enchantments dark and light. Uncanny and
unexpected creatures appear from behind bushes, rise from beneath the seas, or
manifest from seasonal storms to pursue the objects of their attention—with
amorous or sinister intent—relentlessly. From
the gentle tones of a storyteller’s cadences to the terror of a blood
sacrifice, tales of favorite characters from Marr’s Wicked Lovely novels mix
with accounts of new characters in this story collection.
All is not well in the Eight Kingdoms. In
Lyonya, King Kieri is about to celebrate marriage to his beloved, the half-elf
Arian. But uncanny whispers from the spirits of his ancestors continue to warn
of treachery and murder. A finger of suspicion has been pointed toward his
grandmother, the queen of the Ladysforest elves, and that suspicion has only
intensified with time and the Lady’s inexplicable behavior. Clearly, she is
hiding something. But what? And why? Meanwhile, in Tsaia, the young king Mikeli must grapple with unrest
among his own nobility over his controversial decision to grant the title and
estates of a traitorous magelord to a Verrakaien who not only possesses the
forbidden magic but is a woman besides: Dorrin, once one of Kieri’s most
trusted captains. Third in the Paladin Legacy series.
Suddenly, being bitten by a werewolf is the
least of Joanne Walker’s problems. Her
personal life in turmoil, her job as a cop over, she’s been called to Ireland
by the magic within her. And though Joanne’s skills have grown by leaps and
bounds, Ireland’s magic is old and very powerful. In fact, this is a case of
unfinished business. Because the woman Joanne has come to Ireland to rescue is
the woman who sacrificed
everything for Joanne—the woman who died a year ago. Now, through a slip in
time, she’s in thrall to a dark power and Joanne must battle darkness, time,
and the gods themselves to save her.
Brie’s life ends at sixteen: Her boyfriend
tells her he doesn’t love her, and the news breaks her heart—literally. But now that she’s D&G (dead and
gone), Brie is about to discover that love is way more complicated than she
ever imagined. Back in Half Moon Bay, her family has begun to unravel. Her best
friend has been keeping a secret about Jacob, the boy she loved and lost—and
the truth behind his shattering betrayal. And then there’s Patrick, Brie’s
mysterious new guide and resident Lost Soul, who might hold the key to her
forever after.
It begins with a dead body at the far end of
Baker Street tube station, all that remains of American exchange student James
Gallagher—and the victim’s wealthy, politically powerful family is
understandably eager to get to the bottom of the gruesome murder. The trouble
is, the bottom—if it exists at all—is deeper and more unnatural than anyone
suspects—except, that is, for London constable and sorcerer’s apprentice Peter
Grant. With Inspector Nightingale, the last registered wizard in England, tied
up in the hunt for the rogue magician known as “the Faceless Man,” it’s up to
Peter to plumb the haunted depths of the oldest, largest, and—as of now—deadliest
subway system in the world. Third in the Peter Grant series.
All Calliope Reaper-Jones ever wanted out of life
was a fabulous job in New York City and a really hot boyfriend. But now, she’s
the brand-new President of Death, Inc. With the Board of Death breathing down
her neck and her dad’s copy of How
to be Death (A Fully Annotated
Guide) unopened,
Callie’s really feeling the tension. And when the guide book is stolen at a
fancy formal dinner, Callie has to figure out how to be the boss—before the
powers held within the book get out and destroy humanity forever. Fourth in the
Calliope Reaper-Jones series.
Reality is wavering. Soon, its delicate balance
will shift and an ancient force will return to overwhelm the Veiled Isles. The
otherworldly change has begun. The streets of the city are rife with chaos,
plague, and revolt. And it is here that Jianna Belandor, once a pampered daughter
of privilege, returns to face new challenges. The dead walk the streets. The docile amphibian slaves
of humanity have taken up arms. Jianna’s home lies in ruins. Her only happiness
resides in her growing attraction to Falaste Rione, a brilliant nomadic physician
whose compassion and courage have led him to take dangerous risks. Second in
the Veiled Isles trilogy.
Global warming has
transformed the Earth, and it’s about to get even hotter. The Arctic Ice
Cap has all but melted, and the international community is racing desperately
to claim the massive amounts of oil beneath the newly accessible ocean. Enter
the Gaia Corporation. Its two founders have come up with a plan to roll back
global warming. Thousands of tiny mirrors floating in the air can create a
giant sunshade, capable of redirecting heat and cooling the earth’s surface.
They plan to terraform Earth to save it from itself—but in doing so, they have
created a superweapon the likes of which the world has never seen.
Alexia Tarabotti, Lady Maccon, has settled into
domestic bliss. Of course, being Alexia, such bliss involves integrating
werewolves into London High society, living in a vampire’s second-best closet,
and coping with a precocious toddler who is prone to turning supernatural
willy-nilly. Even Ivy Tunstell’s acting troupe’s latest play cannot put a damper
on Alexia’s enjoyment of her new London lifestyle. Until, that is, she receives a summons from Alexandria
that cannot be ignored. With husband, child, and Tunstells in tow, Alexia
boards a steamer to cross the Mediterranean. But Egypt may hold more mysteries
than even the indomitable Lady Maccon can handle. Fifth in the Parasol
Protectorate series.
The Book of Eador, Abjurations 12:14, is very clear: Suffer ye not the
life of a witch. For a thousand years, the Church Knights have obeyed that
commandment, sending to the stake anyone who can hear the songs of the earth.
There are no exceptions, not even for one of their own. Novice Knight Gair can hear music no one else can,
beautiful, terrible music: music with power. In the Holy City, that can mean
only one thing: death by fire—until an unlikely intervention gives him a chance
to flee the city and escape the flames. With the Church Knights and their
witchfinder hot on his heels, Gair hasn’t time to learn how to use the power
growing inside him, but if he doesn’t master it, that power will tear him apart.
U.S. release.
As humankind approaches the Singularity, when transcendence will
be achieved through technology, contact will be made. In the wake of the near
destruction of the solar system, the political powers on Earth seek a separate
peace with an inscrutable alien life form that no one has ever seen. But
Admiral Alexander Koenig, the hero of Alphekka, has gone rogue, launching his
fabled battlegroup beyond the boundaries of Human Space against all orders.
With Confederation warships in hot pursuit, Koenig is taking the war for
humankind’s survival directly to a mysterious omnipotent enemy. Third in the
Star Carrier series.
With her master dead and her oaths foresworn,
necromancer and spy Isyllt Iskaldur finds herself in exile. Hounded by
assassins, she seeks asylum in Assar, the empire she so recently worked to
undermine. Warlords threaten the empire’s
fragile peace, and the empress is beset by enemies within the court. Even
worse, darkness stirs in the deep desert. Ancient spirits long held captive are
waking—spirits that can destroy Assar faster than any army. Third in the Necromancer Chronicles.
Egert is a brash, confident member of the elite
guards and an egotistical philanderer. But after he kills an innocent student
in a duel, a mysterious man known as “The Wanderer” challenges Egert and
slashes his face with his sword, leaving Egert with a scar that comes to
symbolize his cowardice. Unable to end his suffering by his own hand, Egert
embarks on an odyssey to undo the curse and the horrible damage he has caused,
which can only be repaired by a painful journey down a long and harrowing path.
When killing people is your job, there’s no such thing as a
vacation. Then again, how often does an assassin live long enough to enjoy
her retirement? In this line of work, you either get lucky or you get dead. And
since I destroyed my nemesis Mab Monroe a few weeks ago, all of Ashland’s
lowlifes are gunning to make a name for themselves by taking out the lethal
Spider—me, Gin Blanco. So I’m leaving behind my beloved barbecue joint and
heading south with my baby sister, Bria, to cool my heels in a swanky beach
town. Call it a weekend of fun in the sun. But when a powerful vampire with
deadly elemental magic threatens an old friend of Bria’s, it looks like I’ll
have to dig my silverstone knives out of my suitcase after all. Sixth in the
Elemental Assassin series.
