If
it’s Monday, it must be time to look at the new releases in speculative fiction
this week—and you get to pick which one you’d like to win! We have a pretty
good-sized list this week, although not as long as I’d first thought—I think
last week’s was tougher.
What
do you want to read? Leave a comment and tell me, and I’ll draw one name to win
his or her choice. International, as always. And if the book is in a series you
haven’t started, you can always pick the first one in the series instead.
Under the Moons
of Mars: New Adventures on Barsoom, edited by John Joseph
Adams
(Feb. 7, Simon & Schuster)
Readers of all ages have loved Edgar Rice
Burroughs’ Barsoom series since the first book, A
Princess of Mars, was published in 1912. Now, in time for the 100th
anniversary of that seminal work, comes an anthology of original stories
featuring John Carter of Mars in brand-new adventures. Collected by veteran
anthology editor John Joseph Adams, this anthology features stories from Peter
S. Beagle, Jonathan Maberry, Catherynne M. Valente, Tobias S. Buckell, Joe R.
Lansdale, Robin Wasserman, Austin Grossman, and Garth Nix, plus original
illustrations. Science fiction
The Crescent Moon Kingdoms, land of djenn and
ghuls, holy warriors and heretics, Khalifs and killers, is at the boiling point
of a power struggle between the iron-fisted Khalif and the mysterious master
thief known as the Falcon Prince. In the midst of this brewing rebellion a
series of brutal supernatural murders strikes at the heart of the Kingdoms. It
is up to a handful of heroes to learn the truth behind these killings. When
they learn that the murders and the Falcon Prince's brewing revolution are
connected, the companions must race against time before Dhamsawaat, and the
world itself, turns into a blood-soaked ruin.
Fantasy
Business is booming at Harlow Jane Cassidy’s
custom dressmaking boutique—even with her great-grandmother’s ghost hanging
around the shop. But when a local golf pro is found stabbed with dressmaking
shears, the new town deputy suspects Harlow. Now she has to clear her name
before the next outfit she designs is a prison jumpsuit. Second in the Magical
Dressmaking mystery series. Paranormal mystery
As the world begins to fall apart around her, Cassiel finds
herself fighting those she once called her own—the Djinn. With Weather Warden
Luis Rocha and the rescued child Ibby by her side, Cassiel struggles to find a
way to protect those that are in her charge and come to terms with the
leadership role she never asked for. Cassiel is opposed by a powerful Djinn
bent on raising an army of kidnapped Warden children to bring about nothing
less than the end of the world. It will take everything Cassiel has to stop the
Djinn from starting a war that will wipe all of humanity from the face of the
earth.. Fourth in the Outcast Season series. Urban fantasy
For alien Commander Arid Ricimer there was no going home. His
species was winning the war with Earth, but the civilization he had fought for
was gone, destroyed from within by ideologues and bureaucrats. So he does the
only thing that makes sense to a person of integrity—he attempts to defect to
Earth with his officers and an entire spaceship, a vessel that mounts a
superweapon of almost unimaginable power. Hot on his heels is his former fleet,
a force that has already devastated Earth once, and is poised to wipe humanity
from existence forever, ready to do almost anything to deny Earth a chance. All
depends on the courage of an honorable alien warrior and the intelligence and
daring of his human allies. Science fiction
As the various factions fight for control of
the Adamatine Palace, mankind’s nemesis approaches. The realms dragons are
awakening from their alchemical sedation and returning to their native fury.
They can remember why they were created and they now know what mankind has done
to them. And their revenge will be brutal. As hundreds of dragons threaten a
fiery apocalypse only the Adamantine Guard stand between humanity and
extinction. Can Prince Jehal fight off the people who want him dead and unite
their armies in one final battle for survival? Third and final in The Memory of
Flames series. First U.S. release. Fantasy

From a Western circus where monsters and heroes
collide, to a Civil War robot that clanks into battle, to a mining family that encounters
parallel universes, Westward Weird features thirteen original stories
that open the Old West to new frontiers of science fiction and fantasy. Stories
by Kerrie Hughes, Jay Lake, Larry D. Sweazy, Anton Strout, Seanan McGuire,
Brenda Cooper, Christopher McKitterick, Steven Saus, Dean Wesley Smith,
Kristine Kathryn Rusch, Jennifer Brozek, J. Steven York, Jeff Mariotte, and Jody Lynn Nye. Weird
West/Steampunk
There is no mercy in the demon realm. Until an
unlikely champion is born—Annika, half-blood daughter of the Na’Reish King,
longs for more than her tormented life among her fathe’s people. With the Na’Reish
vastly outnumbering them, Kalan, a Light Blade warrior, knows the future of
humankind depends on him alone. When Annika learns Kalan is a prisoner in her
father’s dungeon, her dream of escape seems within reach. She must learn to
trust him as they face not only the perilous journey to the border but enemies
within the Council—and discover a shocking truth that could throw the human
race into civil war. Urban fantasy
Whoever said vacations were relaxing? To say half-vampire, half-witch Ana Parker
has boy trouble is putting it lightly. Her rocker ex-boyfriend Nikolai is
trying to heat things up again, and high school hockey star Mathew wants her to
try out with him for the Renaissance Festival. At least her sort-of boyfriend
Elias isn’t hounding her cell—considering the vampire knight is currently
living in her basement. But when the
Prince of the Southern Region vampires informs Ana that they’re on the brink of
war and she accidentally offers up Elias as a peace offering, the princess
knows that she’s going to need some help to get out of the situation. YA
Continuing the journey she began in Dragon
Keeper and Dragon Haven, Hobb rejoins a
small group of weak, half-formed and unwanted dragons and their displaced human
companions as they search for a legendary sanctuary. Now, as the misfit band
approaches its final destination, dragons and keepers alike face a challenge so
insurmountable that it threatens to render their long, difficult odyssey
utterly meaningless. Book three in the Rain Wild Chronicles. Fantasy
Nola O’Grady has enough trouble when a were-leopard accuses her
of receiving stolen property. But when her younger brother Michael goes
searching for their missing father, he lands himself and his brother, Sean, in
a world of hurt—literally—in a deviant world version of San Francisco. Can Nola
and her partner in the Apocalypse Squad, Israeli Interpol agent Ari Nathan,
find her brothers in time to save them from death by radiation poisoning? The
search will lead them through a city of secrets, but the worst secret of all
lurks at the heart of the only thing Nola loves more than Ari: her family. Urban
fantasy
After an apocalyptic
battle, the meta-humans have turned back an invasion of super-science powered
Nazi war machines–and at least driven whoever is in control of them to pause
and regroup. Now meta-hero organizations Echo and sometime Russian ally CCCP
must go on offense and battle back. Task one: to hunt down the puppetmasters
behind the Nazi robot invasion and try to cut off the multi-universe plague
they have unleashed. To do so, the heroes of Echo face the guardians of a trove
of Nazi armor. Meanwhile, a sadistic supervillain arises who is determined to
defeat both heroes and Thulians alike–a villain who just may have the wealth
and cunning to pull it off. Science fiction
(Sorry, Blogger refused to upload this cover image for some reason!) The Lonike sisters have returned to Port Rock,
Maine, in hiding from the dangerous Mer queens. But on the hunt for the queen,
Addison can’t resist joining the naval task force, especially when its captain
is hunky and as ready for adventure as she is. As thing heat up at sea, an
encounter with a new race of male sea-shifters and their handsome leader has
her questioning the longings of her heart. Third in the Dark Tides series. Paranormal
romance
Ana Cordona has been a strong leader for the
lupine shifters who survived after all the males and most of the females in her
pack were mysteriously poisoned. As tough as she is, with no Alpha male, the
pack is vulnerable to the devious shifter Taggart, who wants to claim both
their ranch and Ana as his own. When Connor Armstrong comes back into her life,
promising protection, it’s almost enough to make Ana forget how he walked out
on her before—and reluctantly accept his offer to mate. But Taggart and his rival pack are not
their only enemies. A human element in town is targeting shifters. First in a
new series. Paranormal romance
Everybody knows Cate Cahill and her sisters are
eccentric. Too pretty, too reclusive, and far too educated. But the truth is
even worse: they’re witches. And if their secret is discovered by the priests
of the Brotherhood, it would mean an asylum, a prison ship—or an early grave. Before her mother died, Cate promised to
protect her sisters. But with only six months left to choose between marriage
and the Sisterhood, she might not be able to keep her word, especially after
she finds her mother's diary, uncovering a secret that could spell her family's
destruction. YA
With the touch of her palms to the skin of a crime
victim, San Francisco tattoo artist Etaín can see the faces of the guilty and
draw them. Changeling elf but unaware of it, magic and gift have put her on the
path of two compelling men. Cathal
Dunne, the son of an Irish mob boss, needs Etaín’s help finding the rapists who
left his cousin for dead. Eamon, a powerful elf lord, is determined to make her
his consort-wife. One of the men is
willing to share her. The other isn’t—until the search for a sexual predator
turns deadly—and only by paying magic’s price will there be any future. Paranormal
romance
He lives to kill monsters. He keeps his city
safe. And his silver hollow-points and back-from-the-dead abilities help him
take out any kind of supernatural threat. But now an immortal evil has this
bad-ass bounty hunter dead in its sights. Ever since a monster murdered his
family, Deacon Chalk hunts any creature that preys on the innocent. So when a
pretty vampire girl “hires” him to eliminate a fellow slayer, Deacon goes to
warn him—and barely escapes a vampire ambush. Now he’s got a way-inexperienced
newbie hunter to protect and everything from bloodsuckers to cursed immortals
on his trail. First in a new series. Urban
fantasy
Since feeding her his blood, Lucian Roman has
struggled with his obsession with Bronwyn Kettler—fighting an uncontrollable
desire to kill her, if he has to, and the vampire she has sworn to wed. But
when a dangerous enemy threatens Bronwyn, only Lucian can save her life. Even
if it means sacrificing his own. Third in the Mark of the Vampire series. Paranormal
romance
Pressia barely remembers the Detonations or much about life
during the Before. And now, at an age when everyone is required to turn
themselves over to the militia to either be trained as a soldier or, if they
are too damaged and weak, to be used as live targets, Pressia can no longer
pretend to be small. Partridge, whose father is one of the most influential men
in the Dome, feels isolated and lonely. Different. So when a slipped phrase
suggests his mother might still be alive, Partridge risks his life to leave the
Dome to find her. When Pressia meets Partridge, their worlds shatter all over
again. YA
Donna Underwood is in deep trouble. An ancient
alchemical order is holding her accountable for destroying the last precious
drops of the elixar of life. Never mind the fact that Donna was acting to free
her friend, Navin, from the dangerous clutches of the Wood Queen at the time.
But what the alchemists have in store is nothing compared to the wrath of the
fey. The Wood Queen has been tricked and Donna must pay. Get ready for all hell—literally—to
break loose. Second in the Iron Witch series. YA

I always wait a while after being fortunate enough to win a giveaway before even TRYING to do so again, and I'm not entirely sure I feel I've waited long enough after being so lucky in December, but I HAVE to at least enter this one because Robin Hobb is probably my all time favorite author. And so her new one is obviously my pick.
ReplyDeleteI highly recommend that EVERYONE read her book Assassin's Apprentice, even if you don't read fantasy, even if the premise doesn't sound interesting to you. If you don't like the book, you simply don't have a heart or a soul. So read it EVERYONE!
