So I've been looking forward to today's featured book, even though I've gotten a little burned out on YA lately. Author Amy Carol Reeves has taken on Victorian London and Jack the Ripper! And while it has some of the "why is it that only a teenager can bring down the big bad serial killer and save the world" element, it's a cool read and a nice bit of gothic worldbuilding.

ABOUT RIPPER: “I felt hot breath on my neck, and, horrified, I knew that he stood behind me . . .”
It’s 1888, and after her mother’s sudden death, Abbie is sent to live with her grandmother in a posh London neighborhood. When she begins volunteering at Whitechapel Hospital, Abbie finds she has a passion for helping the abused and sickly women there.
But within days, patients begin turning up murdered at the hands of Jack the Ripper. As more women are murdered, Abbie realizes that she and the Ripper share a strange connection: she has visions showing the Ripper luring his future victims to their deaths—moments before he turns his knife upon them. Her desperation to stop the massacres leads Abbie on a perilous hunt for the killer. And her search leads to a mysterious brotherhood whose link to the Ripper threatens not just London but all of mankind.
Have you read any Ripper fiction or seen any Jack the Ripper movies? One of my favorite old movies is Time After Time. Malcolm McDowell plays H.G. Wells, and when Jack the Ripper (brilliantly played by David Warner) steals his time machine and zooms off to modern times to start killing women in our world, the famous author/inventor has to chase him down.

thanks for mentioning Time After Time. I saw it ages ago and really liked it, but couldn't remember the name so didn't know how to find it again until now.
ReplyDeleteI also really liked From Hell.

Yes, I recently read a historical cozy mystery by Robin Paige, where the Ripper plot is unveiled. And I really can believe that story. Sorry, can't remember which title it was at the moment.

Oh I'm curious about this one, the stories about Jack the ripper are always very interesting. I read a lot of them but it's always in some TV shows that I saw him the most. The first movie I have in mind is From Hell. It was a relly great movie.
