Now...it's Friday, I started a new dent in my TBR pile yesterday--thanks for entering! So, what shall we do today...Let's look at a new steampunk!
Pip Ballantine and Tee Morris started their Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences series last year with Phoenix Rising. It was a riot, with a steel-corseted (figuratively if not literally) secret agent Eliza Braun being unhappily (at first) teamed up with mousy archivist Wellington Books. Talk about an odd couple! But, like many odd couples, they're very entertaining. So I'm looking forward to the second book in the series, The Janus Affair, which came out reccently. I should add here that I'm a really fast reader...normally...but for some reason I can't read steampunk quickly, which is why I don't read more of it. I find it a really entertaining genre, and I feel kind of ashamed that I let my schedule dictate my reading, but...there it is.
Anyway, I have an extra copy of both books in this series, so I'll be giving away the set today--both Phoenix Rising and The Janus Affair. Read on to learn about both books.
ABOUT PHOENIX RISING: Evil is most assuredly afoot—and Britain’s fate rests in the hands of an alluring renegade . . . and a librarian. These are dark days indeed in Victoria’s England. Londoners are vanishing, then reappearing, washing up as corpses on the banks of the Thames, drained of blood and bone. Yet the Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences—the Crown’s clandestine organization whose bailiwick is the strange and unsettling—will not allow its agents to investigate. Fearless and exceedingly lovely Eliza D. Braun, however, with her bulletproof corset and a disturbing fondness for dynamite, refuses to let the matter rest . . . and she’s prepared to drag her timorous new partner, Wellington Books, along with her into the perilous fray. For a malevolent brotherhood is operating in the deepening London shadows, intent upon the enslavement of all Britons. And Books and Braun—he with his encyclopedic brain and she with her remarkable devices—must get to the twisted roots of a most nefarious plot . . . or see England fall to the Phoenix!
ABOUT THE JANUS AFFAIR: Evildoers beware Retribution is at hand, thanks to Britain's best-kept secret agents. Certainly no strangers to peculiar occurrences, agents Wellington Books and Eliza Braun are nonetheless stunned to observe a fellow passenger aboard Britain's latest hypersteam train suddenly vanish in a dazzling bolt of lightning. They soon discover this is not the only such disappearance . . . with each case going inexplicably unexamined by the Crown. The fate of England is once again in the hands of an ingenious archivist paired with a beautiful, fearless lady of adventure. And though their foe be fiendishly clever, so then is Mr. Books . . . and Miss Braun still has a number of useful and unusual devices hidden beneath her petticoats.
So, ready to read some steampunk? You know the drill--leave a comment for an entry. Have you read any steampunk? If so, what do you like about it? I marvel at the sheer cleverness of it; I can't imagine ever writing something like that. As always, extra entries for blog follow, Twitter follow @Suzanne_Johnson, and a Tweet or Retween, so four entries possible. Now get steamy!

I'm dying to get into Steampunk literature!
ReplyDeleteIf you're new to steampunk, Pip and Tee are a good starting point. Easy to read and a hoot on top of that!
ReplyDeleteI've been getting into steampunk in the latest year or two - I love teh sheer inventiveness of it all. Plus airships are just cool! :-)

Back before steampunk was a genre there was "The Wild Wild West" on TV [1965 - 1969]. I remember watching the show. Have both books in my TBR pile.

Awesome! I love some steampunk and feel decidedly meh about others. When you take the genre to make your story interesting (and do things you couldn't in another genre) while not losing the core thrust of the story and not getting bogged down in unnecessary dronings-on about how cool your gadgets are, then yay! If most of your story is pages-long descriptions of stuff, then boo. You aren't Tolkein, you don't get a free pass to do that kind of thing.
I really loved the Leviathan YA trilogy by Scott Westerfeld (set in an alternate WWI, focusing on the Austrian heir and an orphaned airshipman girl pretending to be a boy), and the Clockwork Century series by Cherie Priest (alternate Civil War with ZOMBIES!). I did not so much enjoy Felix Gilman's The Half-Made World. He suffered from Tolkein-itis and I ended up skimming through the last third of the book. Will not be picking up the sequel. Also, the Girl Genius comic/novels is a really cool example of what great things can happen by combining genres/mediums.
I've had mixed feelings about the steampunk I've read but this is a series I've been wanting to try.
ReplyDeleteI came across steampunk only recently and I have to say that I really like it! I just think it's really clever and I would love to read more ☺

I have read and loved the Gail Carriger books of Alexia Tarabotti. I have tried some other book which was a cross with star trek's seven of nine and totally disliked that. Don't mess with people!
ReplyDeleteBut I would love to try this series.

Steampunk is a genre that I have trouble with. I would really like to enjoy it, because I find the idea behind it so original. I read Geist by Philippa Ballantine and love it, so I'm hoping that her steampunk serie make me love this genre.

Not yet but I've a copy of Meljean Brook's The Iron Duke in my TBR list that I've been meaning to get to. I still feel amused every time I come across the term Steampunk! It's so quaint!

I love steampunk, though, like all subgenres, really it's all about the story and quality of writing. But steampunk is one of my favorite genres overall, mostly because I love the mash up of sci-fi and alternate history. I've enjoyed Meljean Brooks' books a lot!
ReplyDeleteI have those books ( still to be read)and i'm centering my readings this month on discovering the steampunk romance subgenre but i admit that i have also discovered that yes it's a genre i'm too reading more slowly than others^^;;
ReplyDeleteI got into steampunk in 2010, and since then I'm reading more and more of it. I just absolutely love the whole imaginery of the genre! it's fabulous! the latest 2 books I've read that were absolutely awesome: Tarnished by Karina Cooper and Kiss of Steel by Bec McMaster.
