First, why wait until the 15th? Because beginning next Tuesday, and continuing through Sunday, August 12, I'll be blogging from Authors After Dark 2012 in New Orleans. I am SO excited....and I am SO not ready. I have goody bags to stuff, books to sign and gather, schedules to make out. I signed up for AAD last September, so how can I possibly not be ready? Sigh.
Anyway, here's the book club scoop:
Each book read will last four weeks, which is a much faster schedule than we've done on previous books. We'll begin on Wednesday, August 15, with the first twelve chapters of GUILTY PLEASURES, book one in the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series by Laurell K. Hamilton. Yes, Anne Rice built the modern vampire, but this is the book that laid the groundwork ten years ago for all the urban fantasy that's come since. LKH claims to have invented urban fantasy, and we'll see what elements of GUILTY PLEASURES have helped shape the genre. (Okay, I have an ulterior motive here. Since the 20th anniversary of the book is coming up next year and I'm writing a piece on how it's shaped urban fantasy, I have to re-read it anyway...and did she really invent the genre? That's one thing to talk about.)
The remainder of the fall Preternatura Book Club schedule looks like this:
September: SKINWALKER (Jane Yellow Rock Book 1), by Faith Hunter
October: STORM FRONT (Dresden Files Book 1), by Jim Butcher
November: SPIDER'S BITE (Elemental Assassins, Book 1), by Jennifer Estep
December: DARK LOVER (Black Dagger Brotherhood, Book 1), by JR Ward
Format change! Instead of an exhaustive blow-by-blow of chapters as I've done in the past, I'll pick out a couple of topics from the week's reading and try to get a discussion started. That way, people who aren't reading along can still talk about, for example, badass heroines--certainly something Anita Blake embodies. In the comments, you can also introduce other topics for us to talk about. I'll be checking the blog throughout the day so I can join in the discussion and, hopefully, keep it going.
Prizes! I will do a book giveaway each Wednesday to help draw readers. It could be anything...depends on what I have floating around at the time.
So, my readers, that's the plan for the Preternatura Book Club. Let's try it a few months and see how it works! I hope folks will read along, but even if they don't maybe we can pull them in for comments and chat. What think you?
