New Releases Dec. 8-15 and Reader's Choice C*ntest

First, apologies for being completely out of touch on Sunday. About 9 a.m., the so-not-fabulous Charter Internet service went down and, a "service" call later (and I use that term loosely), it's still down.

There are a couple of River Road Virtual Tour stops today. Both of them offer another chance to enter for the tour-wide prizes as well as the commenter’s prize from the Book Horde. See prize list in the righthand column.

First, I’m over at The Book Nympho today, playing psychiatrist and breaking down the emotional weaknesses of DJ, Alex, Jake, Jean Lafitte, and Rene Delachaise…and maybe the new neighbor Quince Randolph (or maybe not). There’s a promo-only at the Smart Mouth Texan blog as well.

My alter-ego Susannah Sandlin is at author Marina Adair’s blog today, doing an interview as part of Marina’s 12 Days of Christmas Giveaway. So…yes, there’s a giveaway! In addition to Marina's giveaway, I'll do a separate commenter contest for a "Property of Penton Vampires" T-shirt or an Absolution audiobook (CD or mp3--for international readers, the mp3 files will work on any computer).

And now…on to this week’s Reader’s Choice Contest….

The next couple of weeks will be slow slow slow. Publishers don’t release a lot of new books from mid-December through mid-January, so I’ll open up the Reader’s Choice to extend to any book you’ve had on your wish list this year but haven’t gotten yet. The only restriction is that it would be priced at less than $15 US since I buy the Reader’s Choice books out of pocket…so no boxed sets LOL.

The Folly of the World, by Jesse Bullington (December 18, Orbit)
On a stormy night in 1421, the North Sea delivers a devastating blow to Holland: the Saint Elizabeth Flood. Where the factions of the noble Hooks and the merchant Cods waged a literal class war but weeks before, there is now only a nigh-endless expanse of grey water. Into this flooded realm sail three conspirators: a deranged thug at the edge of madness, a ruthless conman on the cusp of fortune, and a half-feral girl balanced between them. If they work together they may find reward beyond reckoning. In a topsy-turvy world where peasants feast while noblemen starve, these three uneasy confederates will learn that theft, fraud, and murder are simply part of politics as usual in the island-city of Dordrecht, and even if their scheme succeeds they may not live long enough to enjoy it.

The Merchant of Dreams (Night’s Masque #2), by Anne Lyle (December 18, Angry Robot)
Exiled from the court of Queen Elizabeth for accusing a powerful nobleman of treason, swordsman-turned-spy Mal Catlyn has been living in France with his young valet Coby Hendricks for the past year. But Mal harbours a darker secret: he and his twin brother share a soul that once belonged to a skrayling, one of the mystical creatures from the New World. When Mal’s dream about a skrayling shipwreck in the Mediterranean proves reality, it sets him on a path to the beautiful, treacherous city of Venice, and a conflict of loyalties that will place him and his friends in greater danger than ever.

Nightstalkers, by Bob Mayer (December 11, 47North)
Staff Sergeant Winthrop Carter has just been drafted into the Nightstalkers , an elite group of soldiers that...Actually, he’s not quite sure what they do. Born from the Area 51 initiative, the Nightstalkers defy sanity and decorum. All of them take their orders from the elusive Ms. Jones, who everyone claims is just a hologram. Those orders include tracking down and sealing tears in our reality that are releasing interdimensional beings known only as Fireflies, creatures that take control of both living and inanimate matter in order to unleash wanton destruction. Just as Carter is settling in, a rogue scientist triggers a fresh invasion of Fireflies that swarm a swanky gated community. It’s up to Carter and his new teammates to neutralize the threat while figuring out who’s behind the breach.

Falling Kingdoms (Falling Kingdoms #1), by Morgan Rhodes (December 11, Razorbill)
Young Adult. In a land where magic has been forgotten but peace has reigned for centuries, a deadly unrest is simmering. Three kingdoms grapple for power, brutally transforming their subjects’ lives in the process. Amidst betrayals, bargains, and battles, four young people find their fates forever intertwined. The only outcome that’s certain is that kingdoms will fall. Who will emerge triumphant when all they know has collapsed?

Princess of the Silver Woods (Princess #3), by Jessica Day George (December 11, Bloomsbury)
Young Adult. When Petunia, the youngest of King Gregor’s twelve dancing daughters, is invited to visit an elderly friend in the neighboring country of Westfalin, she welcomes the change of scenery. But in order to reach Westfalin, Petunia must pass through a forest where strange two-legged wolves are rumored to exist. Wolves intent on redistributing the wealth of the noble citizens who have entered their territory. But the bandit-wolves prove more rakishly handsome than truly dangerous, and it’s not until Petunia reaches her destination that she realizes the kindly grandmother she has been summoned to visit is really an enemy bent on restoring an age-old curse.

The Lady of Secrets (The Dark Queen Saga #6), by Susan Carroll (December 11, Ballantine)
Meg Wolfe, The Lady of Faire Isle, is a gifted healer who can find a cure for almost any ailment. But she’s also the daughter of Cassandra Claire, a mad witch and heretic with a notorious history. Meg’s infamous lineage makes her a target from both those who want to use her extraordinary talents for good and those who want to use them for evil. One man in particular needs her special skills: to execute his revenge on a king. History and a kingdom hang in the balance as Meg tries to navigate the delicate line between right and wrong. And what she discovers is that she can no longer trust anyone or anything, not even her own heart.

What do you want to read? As always, leave a comment telling me the book you’d most like to win, and maybe random.org will make your wishes come true. Your choice of print or digital unless otherwise stated. International? Of course! As long as Book Depository delivers to your country, please enter.

Five entries possible: +1 for comment to tell me what book you want, +1 for blog follow, +1 for Twitter follow, +1 for a Tweet or RT about the contest, +1 for a Facebook follow. This contest is international to any place Book Depository ships. Contests end at midnight CDT U.S. on Saturday, and winners are announced on Sunday’s blog. It’s the responsibility of the winner to contact me with their mailing info. Books unclaimed after a month will go into the Book Horde list (see tab at the top of the page).

Now….go forth and comment!
